Veltheim Method of Lymphatic Drainage

The Veltheim Method of Lymphatic Drainage (VMLD) is a unique approach.

VMLD uses visualisation and kinaesthetic techniques to enhance lymphatic flow beyond traditional methods.

It could be considered a pre-lymphatic technique as it focuses on restoring optimal movement and collection of interstitial fluid. Interstitial fluid, also known as tissue fluid, is a clear, colourless fluid found in the spaces between the cells of the body. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and proper functioning of our cells. Interstitial fluid provides structural support to cells, safeguarding tissue integrity and preventing cell damage due to mechanical stress, making it an integral component in cellular health and overall bodily function.

VMLD does not conform to Western medical models of lymphatic drainage. Whereas traditional methods of lymphatic drainage incorporate techniques that focus on stimulating the movement of lymph fluid through the lymph vessels and lymph nodes, VMLD focuses attention at the general tissue level and the restoration of circulation of interstitial fluid. It incorporates sweeping movements in a variety of directions to create natural pressure differentials which reduces accumulation and encourage flow of interstitial fluid into local lymphatic structures.

The Veltheim Method of Lymphatic Drainage provides an effective approach to identifying and resolving areas of congested emotion. When the neuropeptides of emotion accumulate in tissue, the chemistry of the area is altered. VMLD helps to move congested chemicals of emotion from the tissues and into the lymphatic system for elimination.

Potential Benefits of VMLD

Improved Lymphatic Function

Lymphatic drainage techniques are generally designed to help stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid, which may support the removal of waste products, toxins, and excess interstitial fluid from tissues. This can contribute to reducing swelling, edema, and enhancing overall lymphatic function.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction

The Veltheim Method, like other lymphatic drainage techniques, involves gentle and rhythmic movements, which can induce relaxation and reduce stress. This relaxation effect may help the body's natural healing processes by supporting parasympathetic activation.

Enhanced Immune Function

A well-functioning lymphatic system is essential for a strong immune response. By promoting lymphatic flow and helping to remove toxins and pathogens, the Veltheim Method may potentially support immune system function.

Pain Relief

Some individuals report relief from pain and discomfort associated with conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and certain musculoskeletal issues after lymphatic drainage sessions. This effect is thought to result from the reduction of inflammation and improved fluid balance.

Improved Circulation

Lymphatic drainage techniques may enhance circulation and oxygen supply to tissues, potentially promoting wound healing, reducing the appearance of scars, and improving skin health.

Detoxification

Techniques designed to optimise lymphatic flow can help the body eliminate toxins. While the body has its own natural detoxification mechanisms, lymphatic drainage may assist in this process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will I be able to see results?

The lymphatic system is a relatively slow-moving system. As a result, the body will be responding to and integrating the treatment for at least three days and often up to 2-3 weeks. The optimal time to receive lymphatic support is during the change of seasons as this is a natural time of detoxification in the body.

How often should I receive VMLD treatments?

A general recommendation for optimal results for most clients to receive VMLD would be every 4 to 6 weeks for general support and maintenance of health.

Are there any contraindications?

Since the VMLD technique is entirely energetic in nature, the contraindications that typically apply to manual lymphatic techniques are not a concern. If a client is experiencing compromised health or recent injury or surgery, the technique is best employed off the body to minimise any stress to the system.

How deep is the pressure for VMLD? Does it hurt?

VMLD is an energetic technique that is proven to be very effective when performed off the body or even at a distance. As a result, pressure is not required to effect change. When using physical contact, the pressure is gentle, light and consistent. With each pass, the focus will deepen but the pressure will remain constant.
